The South Street Star
Ron Kaplan, who had worked at The Drummer, was the owner/publisher of The South Street Star. I started setting type at night. I was still working full-time at WMMR and couldn't handle the combined hours from both jobs, so I quit the radio station.
After that, I worked as editorial assistant and wrote art reviews (as E.Y. Brewton). I even sold ads--or tried to--for a few months.
The work was great fun and excellent experience. Lovely colleagues, great South Street characters (hi, Kenn!) and always something cool happening in the local galleries and museums. Writing about art helped me get my next job, at the Art Alliance.

I like to think I discovered Judith Schaechter ...
... when I reviewed her solo show at Nexus Gallery in 1986. I moved away from Philadelphia, and the next time I saw her work was a cover illustration for The New Yorker in 1993.
