Marion's 'chalk talks' My grandmother used to give "chalk talks" for groups of kids. When I was 6 or 7 years old, and she brought me with her to a chalk talk at the Chevy Chase Elementary School, across the street from her house.
Marion tucked a giant pad of paper under her arm, tossed a box of crayons into her pocketbook, and we walked across Rosemary Circle to the school. I remember feeling shy but proud to tag along into a classroom full of children, where Marion perched on a stool and told stories, illustrating them as she went along. I wish we'd kept some of those giant pads of paper! (Although it's likely Marion gave the pictures to the children after her story was told.) -- Emily |
