Teddy's Camp-Out, written and illustrated by Marion Holland (1963)
Teddy's family is traveling to a wedding in Chicago; instead of going with them, Teddy gets to stay at his friend Joe's house. As a thank-you to Joe's parents, Teddy's parents invite Joe come to stay for a few days beforehand.
But when the day comes and Teddy's parents drop the boys off and drive away, Joe's mother can't let them in. Surprise! Joe's little brother has just come down with scarlet fever; the house is under quarantine.
So Joe and Teddy go back to Teddy's empty house. It could be fun, and there's plenty of food in the house. ...
"There's only one thing. Whatever dishes or pots or pans we get dirty, we'll have to wash them ourselves."
"I know," said Joe glumly. "Sort of takes your appetite away, doesn't it?"
It seems like a great idea to take the food and camp out, instead of having to do any cleaning. But more surprises are in store for Joe and Teddy.
