Brief Heroes & Histories: Akadine Press, 1998
In her Afterword to Brief Heroes & Histories, edited by Chris Carruth and Thomas Meagher, Barbara wrote that the collection represented "my most recent years out of decades of writing to earn a living. Some of the pieces I wanted to write. Different publications called for different styles. They all paid me money."
(Brief Heroes & Histories includes characters from Elvis Presley to Pocahontas, in pieces previously published in Smithsonian, Discovery Channel Monthly, A & E Monthly and Mid-Atlantic Country magazines.) "I get bored easily," Barbara wrote. "A magazine article or a book that takes a year or less to research, that's me. Assignments to learn five thousand words about the history of juries, the Folies-Bergeres, Columbus, Robin Hood, the Railroad Barons, apples, Mata Hari, Charlemagne, ice cream, Katharine Hepburn, Manifest Destiny, and Elvis Presley have made me very happy. My only requirement is that I not know anything about it to begin with." Reviews and copies for sale: Amazon LibraryThing Barbara's next book >
