all those words
celebrates James Joyce's Ulysses

Among my favorite lines from James Joyce's Ulysses is
"... wrote me that letter with all those words in it how could he."

"And with that he took the bloody old towser by the scruff of the neck and, by Jesus, he near throttled him."

Kingsley Amis’s Lucky Jim (1953) introduced me to this phrase. When I later read the original line in Ulysses, I was very happy to see it again. My father’s print and film fragments provided a perfect set of images; Brewton was obsessed with a movie from 1965, “Sands of the Kalahari.”

"Mr Leopold Bloom ate with relish the inner organs of beasts and fowls. He liked thick giblet soup, nutty gizzards, a stuffed roast heart, liverslices fried with crustcrumbs, fried hencods' roes.
Most of all he liked grilled mutton kidneys which gave to his palate a fine tang of faintly scented urine."
